Harworth Church of England Academy

Welcome to Snowy Owls.

Year 2

Snowy Owls

Welcome back after what I hope has given you all a rest. We have lots of exciting new learning for the spring term. In our History we will be learning about The Plague and The Great Fire of London. We are also learning about the United Kingdom in Geography and special landmarks. If you have been to a significant landmark in the UK you have visited please send a picture to my email address.

We continue to write stories in English and it would be great if your child could have a practice of their skills at home.

Further down the page you will find our snapshot of learning which will also help with homework.

Please see some important information below:

Homework and spellings

Homework and spellings will be set every Friday and will need to be completed and handed in by the following Thursday. This routine will help the children and encourages independence as they go through year 2. Please encourage your child to establish a consistent homework and spelling routine to reinforce their classroom learning.

P.E.

PE will take place on Mondays. On these days, please ensure your child comes to school in the correct PE kit. It is also important that on these days, they do not wear any jewellery or cover with plasters and shoulder length hair to be tied back.

This year your child will use the entrance by the hall and they will enter via this back door. The doors open each morning at 8:40am and a member of staff is on the door to pass on any messages to me. At home time please could all parents/carers stand on the playground near to the stage area/covering to ease congestion.

Reading

Reading is a key part of school life and early reading is the start of a wonderful journey into discovering a whole new world of stories, facts and adventures.

We will be continuing our reading adventure with our very own snowy owl, Fluffy, who will be coming home with your child to share a reading book of their choice with Fluffy, in a place of their choice. All we ask is that you snap a picture of your child reading with the owl and email it to school - look out for a text and the bag coming home very soon!

Remember every Tuesday we change our books as it is Choosy Tuesday - please return your reading for pleasure book to get a new one for the week to share with your family.

To support your child in their reading we encourage you to listen to them read as often as you can and make a note in their reading records on how they did.

Reading will be individual at the beginning or end of the term and all other reading will be in a guided group session.

More books for reading can be found here https://schoolreadinglist.co.uk/reading-lists-for-ks1-school-pupils/suggested-reading-list-year-2-pupils-ks1-age-6-7/

If you have any questions or queries please get in touch via the school office.

Many thanks for your continued support

Mrs Potton
